FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do you accept everyone into the Built by Birdies program?
No. To ensure that every family receives the high-touch, personalized attention required for a successful recruitment journey, we strictly limit the number of active athletes we support. We only partner with dedicated junior golfers and families whose goals align with our high-performance mentorship model.
Additionally, we typically do not accept new 12th-grade clients. The collegiate recruitment timeline is a multi-year process, and to deliver the "best-fit" results our brand is known for, we believe in starting the strategic work much earlier. Exceptions to this 12th-grade policy are made only under very specific circumstances and after a thorough initial evaluation. Our mission is to provide an elite service, and that begins with ensuring we have the proper time and runway to make a meaningful impact on your child's future.

What makes Built by Birdies different from a standard recruiting service or a swing coach?
A swing coach focuses on your mechanics; we focus on your trajectory. Most recruiting services are "database-heavy," meaning they just blast your profile to hundreds of coaches. At Built by Birdies, we provide Strategic Mentorship. We use a player-first approach—led by a former D1 athlete—to align your technical skills, tournament resume, and academic profile into a cohesive brand that coaches actually trust.
At what age should a junior golfer start working with a consultant?
While the NCAA recruiting "window" has specific dates, the Competitive Blueprint should begin as early as ages 12–14. Starting early allows us to optimize your tournament schedule and build the elite daily habits that make a player recruitable by the time they reach high school.
Do you have direct contact information for college coaches?
Yes. We maintain an updated database of over 250 Division I, DII, DIII, and NAIA golf coaches. This includes verified head coach and assistant coach email addresses. However, we believe a "contact" is only as good as the strategy behind it. Along with the directory, we provide the templates and timing strategies you need to ensure your email actually gets opened and read.
Do you guarantee a Division I scholarship?
No ethical consultant can guarantee a scholarship, as that decision lies solely with college coaches. However, we guarantee a Strategic Alignment. Our goal is to find your "Best-Fit" institution where your athletic talent, academic goals, and lifestyle desires overlap. We help you identify the right level of play—whether DI, DII, DIII, or NAIA- where you can be a high-impact contributor.
How do you determine which tournaments my athlete should play in?
We utilize a Scheduling Framework. Instead of the "shotgun approach" of playing every weekend, we analyze "recruiter density" and "strength of field." We identify specific events that offer the highest ROI for your specific ranking goals, ensuring your travel budget is spent where it will be most effective.
Will you be communicating with college coaches on my behalf?
We guide the process via our Player-to-Coach Protocol. College coaches want to see leadership and maturity from the athlete, not an agent. We coach the student-athlete on how to initiate authentic, professional outreach and how to handle high-pressure conversations, ensuring they stand out from the hundreds of templated emails coaches receive daily.
The cost of junior golf is already high. Why should I add a consulting fee to my expenses?
Most families spend the year guessing—guessing which coaches to email and which events to enter. We spend it positioning. You cannot buy back a recruiting window once it closes, and by the time most families realize they are "lost," the roster spots and scholarship dollars are already gone.
If you decide against consulting, you aren't "saving" $6,000—you are risking the massive cost of a missed opportunity. When it comes to the limited time-frame of recruiting, “zero" is often the most expensive price you can pay. Our goal is for you to make money on us. Think of Built by Birdies like a high-level accountant: we are here to save you more than we cost you. We cannot "buy" a scholarship for you, but if a student-athlete follows our roadmap and does the work, the math has the opportunity to speak for itself. For example, a $6,000 investment that helps secure a $24,000/year offer is a 1,500% return on investment over four years. Our goal is to identify hidden roster spots and funding opportunities you aren't aware of, ensuring your travel budget is directed toward high-leverage outcomes instead of "dead-end" tournaments. We provide the map; you provide the drive. We ensure you don't stay lost.

Can your services help reduce the overall cost of college?
Absolutely. While we don't "sell" scholarships, our Multi-Tier Evaluation identifies schools where your athlete’s profile (Athletic + Academic) qualifies for the maximum available aid. Whether it's a full athletic ride, a merit-based academic package, or a strategic combination in DIII/NAIA, we help you find the institutions that offer the best financial fit for your family.
Do you offer different levels of support based on our budget?
We provide tiered engagement levels—from our hourly retainer program, to scheduling help, to our Premium Package (on-going, high-touch advisory). This ensures that every family can access Coach Jamal’s expertise at a scale that fits their needs and recruitment timeline.
Is this a "once-and-done" service, or will you be with us until Signing Day?
Our Premium Package is a 12 month service, but designed to be a Long-Term Partnership. We would love to stay in your corner until the final decision is made, and even once recruited, guide you on how to transition properly to your freshman year in college.
How much direct access do we have to Coach Jamal during the program?
Built by Birdies is a boutique service, not a "factory." Our premium clients have direct, scheduled access to Coach Jamal for strategy sessions, check-ins, and recruitment advice. We limit the number of athletes we take on to ensure every family receives a high-touch, personalized experience.
How soon can we expect a response from Coach Jamal when we have questions?
We pride ourselves on being a high-touch, boutique service. You can typically expect a response within 24–48 business hours. We prioritize urgent recruitment matters (such as a coach reaching out or a pending tournament deadline) to ensure our athletes never miss a critical window. To maintain the quality of our mentorship, we limit the number of active families we serve, ensuring Coach Jamal has the bandwidth to provide thoughtful, strategic feedback to every inquiry.
Will Coach Jamal golf with my athlete during the program?
Built by Birdies is a college recruitment and strategic advisory service, not a swing coach or on-course instruction program. Our focus is on the big picture of your athlete’s collegiate trajectory—strategy, scheduling, and recruitment communication. We believe in staying in our lane of expertise to ensure your family gets the best possible results.
How does your experience as a D1 athlete and top Mid-Amateur benefit my athlete?
My experience provides a "boots-on-the-ground" perspective. I understand the current standards of collegiate play and the mental toughness required to compete at an elite level. I don't just teach the process; I've lived it.
What happens if my athlete's academic profile doesn’t match their golf talent?
We conduct an Academic Alignment Audit early on. If there is a gap, we help you pivot your strategy to find programs that value your athlete's specific profile or help you identify the benchmarks needed to get back on track for your target schools.
Is this only for "Elite" juniors, or do you work with developing players?
We work with dedicated players. Talent is a starting point, but recruitable interest is built through discipline and strategy. If a player is committed to the process, we provide the roadmap to help them reach their potential. We know the top athletes will get recruited, but helping the ones who didn’t think they could play in college land a roster spot is the best part of this job.
What happens if my athlete’s rankings drop during the season?
There's no need to immediately panic. Rankings are naturally fluid so we focus on trend-lines and resilience rather than a single data point. When a dip occurs, we help you analyze the "why" in various areas of the game so you can best utilize your coaches and support team. With refinement, we can position ourselves for a recovery that demonstrates the exact kind of grit college coaches are looking for in a recruit.
Does the Premium Package include help with the NCAA Eligibility Center and compliance?
Yes. We provide a Compliance Roadmap to ensure you are hitting the necessary administrative milestones at the right time, preventing any late-stage surprises that could jeopardize an offer.
Are tournament entries, travel costs, or logistics fees included in the program?
No. To keep our focus entirely on high-level strategy and administrative precision, the Built by Birdies fee covers professional consulting and mentorship only. Families remain responsible for all external costs such as Tournament entry and tour membership fees, NCAA Eligibility Center fees, travel, lodging, transportation, and any external content creation or professional videography fees. Our goal is to act as your strategic advisor, ensuring that when you do spend on these items, you are in position to get the absolute best return on your investment.
What school works best for a junior golfer balancing tournaments and travel?
Through our partnership with Laurel Springs School, Built by Birdies families have access to a fully accredited K-12 online private school with 160+ NCAA-approved courses, built for athletes managing full training and travel schedules. Coursework is self-paced with a personalized calendar that includes blackout dates, so golfers can build school around tournaments instead of the other way around.https://partners.laurelsprings.com/BuiltByBirdies
